Slewing Unit
Connects the mast to the upper structure; the slewing bearing and mechanism enable 360 degree rotation.
← Back to crane parts
The slewing unit is the joint between the fixed mast and the rotating upper structure. It lets the jib, counter-jib and cab turn through a full 360 degrees.

Construction
A large-diameter slewing bearing with an internal or external gear ring, driven by a slewing mechanism of motor, reducer, pinion and brake. Rollers and hardened raceways carry the combined vertical, radial and tilting loads.

Role on the crane
It transmits all upper-structure loads into the mast while allowing controlled rotation. Free-slew, locked and powered-slew modes are selected here, together with the slewing brake and, on many cranes, the slewing limiter.
Inspection and maintenance
- Lubricate the bearing raceway and gear ring to the schedule; check for grease loss and contamination.
- Check gear-ring and pinion wear, backlash and bolt tightness of the bearing.
- Listen for abnormal noise or play, and test the brake and any slewing limiter before each shift.
