Hook Block
Lifting block with hook, pulley block and latch; a high-wear spare part.
← Back to crane parts
The hook block is the point where the crane meets the load. It hangs from the hoist rope and carries the hook, pulley block and safety latch.

Construction
A forged or fabricated hook with a spring-loaded safety latch, mounted on a pulley block that reeves the hoist rope and, on larger blocks, includes a swivel and weight for a clean fall.

Role on the crane
The block multiplies the hoist rope's lifting force through reeving and provides the connection point for slings and lifting gear. It is a high-wear, safety-critical part.
Inspection and maintenance
- Inspect the hook for throat opening, wear, cracks and deformation before each shift; check the safety latch operates freely.
- Check the swivel, sheaves and rope fittings for wear and correct reeving.
- Replace any hook that has been overloaded, cracked or worn beyond the maker's limit.
