Hoist Rope

The hoist rope runs between the hoist winch and the hook block. It is one of the highest-wear parts of the crane and one of the most important to inspect.

Construction

A steel wire rope of the class and diameter specified by the crane maker, terminated with a certified ferrule or socket, reeved through the hook block and drum according to the machine's parts of line.

Role on the crane

The rope transmits the hoisting force from the winch to the load and, together with the sheaves, sets how much the load can be lifted at each rope speed and layer on the drum.

Inspection and maintenance

  • Inspect for broken wires, wear, corrosion, kinking and crushing at the maker's specified intervals.
  • Check rope end terminations and the drum for correct spooling and layer limits.
  • Replace the rope before it reaches the discard criteria; never repair a damaged rope section by cutting and re-terminating on site.
