Counterweight Block
Concrete or cast-iron blocks on the counter-jib, sized to jib length and rated capacity.
← Back to crane parts
Counterweight blocks balance the load on the jib. They are sized to the jib length and rated capacity of each crane, so the correct set matters as much as the blocks themselves.

Construction
Cast-concrete or cast-iron blocks with lifting eyes and locating slots, stacked on the counter-jib platform and secured against movement during slewing.

Role on the crane
The counterweights create a balancing moment that offsets the load on the jib, reducing the bending moment in the mast and letting the crane lift its rated load across the working radius. Fitting the wrong blocks changes the load chart and is unsafe.
Inspection and maintenance
- Use only the counterweight specified for the jib length and load chart.
- Check blocks, lifting eyes and securing devices for cracks and corrosion.
- Confirm the stack is complete and correctly located before each erection.
