Counter-Jib
Short arm opposite the jib, carrying counterweights and the hoist winch to balance lifting moment.
← Back to crane parts
The counter-jib is the short arm opposite the jib. It balances the working arm and carries the machinery that drives the crane.

Construction
A lattice arm similar in build to the jib, with a platform and mounts for the hoist winch, slewing mechanism, counterweight blocks and, on many models, the operator cab.

Role on the crane
The counter-jib carries the counterweights and the hoist winch, so the machine's own weight balances the lifting moment of the jib. Its length and weight set the balance point of the crane and hold the mast within its design stresses.
Inspection and maintenance
- Check machinery mounts and bolts for tightness and vibration damage.
- Inspect the platform, guard rails and access for corrosion and security.
- Verify that counterweight blocks sit correctly and are secured against movement.
