▌ APPLICATION NOTE · OCTOBER 2026 · QUALITY CONTROL Quality Control for Crane Accessories: Material Certs, NDT and Dimensional Checks Crane accessories are structural items, and the difference between a good part and a poor one is often invisible. A weld that looks neat can lack penetration; a section can measure correctly outside and be thin inside; a bolt can carry the right markings and the wrong grade. Quality control is the set of checks that find those differences before the part reaches a crane. This note covers the three pillars of accessory quality control: material traceability, non-destructive testing of welds and dimensional inspection. It also lists the documents a buyer should request, so that quality is something that can be verified rather than assumed.
01 MATERIAL CERTIFICATES A material certificate links the steel used in a part to its grade and heat number. For structural accessories such as mast sections, base frames, pendants and wall ties, the certificate is the evidence that the material is what the drawing specifies. Without it, the part is a shape of unknown steel. The certificate should match the drawing’s grade and be traceable to the batch. Where a supplier cannot provide certificates, the buyer is effectively accepting the part on trust, which is not a sound basis for a lifting structure. ▌ TRACEABLE STEEL Certificates link a part to its grade and heat number. ▌ MATCH THE DRAWING The certificate must show the grade the drawing requires. ▌ NO CERT, NO PROOF Without certificates, the part is steel of unknown quality. 02 NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING Welds carry load, and some welds are critical. Non-destructive testing looks for defects without damaging the part. Common methods include visual inspection, dye penetrant testing for surface cracks, magnetic particle testing for ferromagnetic materials and ultrasonic testing for internal defects. The extent of testing should be agreed in advance: which welds, which method and what acceptance criteria. Testing every weld is rarely practical; testing the critical ones, such as pendant end fittings and load-bearing connections, is both practical and meaningful. ▌ TEST THE CRITICAL WELDS Agree which welds are tested, with which method and criteria. ▌ SURFACE AND INTERNAL Penetrant and magnetic methods find surface defects; ultrasonic finds internal ones. ▌ AGREE BEFORE ORDERING The testing scope belongs in the purchase order. 03 DIMENSIONAL INSPECTION Dimensional inspection checks the features that matter: lengths, hole spacing, flatness of end plates, pin diameters and the squareness of sections. For interchangeable parts such as mast sections, these checks decide whether the part will fit and whether a stack of sections will stay plumb. Inspection reports should record actual measurements, not just a pass mark. Actual values allow a buyer to see trends and to judge whether a supplier’s process is stable or drifting. ▌ CHECK WHAT MATTERS Hole spacing, flatness, pin size and squareness decide fit. ▌ RECORD ACTUAL VALUES Measurements, not just pass marks, show process stability. ▌ INTERCHANGEABILITY Dimensional checks are what make interchangeable parts truly interchangeable.
04 DOCUMENTS TO REQUEST A buyer should ask for the material certificate, the dimensional inspection report, the NDT report where applicable, the coating or galvanising certificate and the packing list. For critical parts, a certificate of conformity ties the whole package together. These documents are not bureaucracy. They are the evidence a site needs if a part is questioned during erection, inspection or an incident investigation. Keeping them with the crane documentation turns a supplier’s promise into a record. ▌ ASK FOR THE SET Material, dimensional, NDT, coating and packing documents. ▌ CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY It ties the package together for critical parts. ▌ KEEP THE RECORD Documents support erection, inspection and incident investigation. 05 WHY IT PAYS Quality control costs a little at the factory and saves a great deal on site. A part that does not fit delays an erection; a weld that fails at height is a safety incident; a batch of bolts of the wrong grade is a structural risk. The checks that prevent these are far cheaper than the consequences. For a buyer, the practical rule is to agree the quality requirements before the order, not after the goods arrive. A supplier who knows what will be inspected tends to build to that standard. ▌ CHEAPER AT THE FACTORY Factory checks cost less than site delays and rework. ▌ AGREE UP FRONT Quality requirements belong in the purchase order. ▌ SUPPLIERS BUILD TO THE CHECK A known inspection standard shapes the build. PROCUREMENT IMPACT ● Require material certificates traceable to the batch for structural parts. ● Agree NDT scope, method and acceptance criteria in the purchase order. ● Request dimensional inspection reports with actual measurements. ● Ask for coating or galvanising certificates and a certificate of conformity. ● Keep all quality documents with the crane documentation. WHAT TO WATCH ● Watch for a certificate that does not match the drawing’s grade. ● Watch NDT scope; testing every weld can hide the critical ones. ● Watch dimensional reports that show only pass marks, not values. ● Watch coating certificates, which are often forgotten. ● Watch the PO; quality agreed after delivery is quality you cannot enforce. Quality Control for Crane Accessories: Material Certs, NDT and Dimensional Checks
Quality control is what separates a part that fits and lasts from one that merely looks right. This note covers material certificates, non-destructive testing, dimensional checks and the documents a buyer should request.
